WordPress & WooCommerce development

WordPress done as engineering rather than plugin accumulation — custom themes, custom plugins, and sites that stay fast after the third year of edits.

What I do with WordPress

  • Custom themes — built to your design, not a marketplace theme with 40 features you will never use
  • Custom plugins — bespoke PHP functionality when no existing plugin does the job correctly
  • WooCommerce stores — products, variations, payments, shipping and checkout configuration
  • Migrations — moving hosts or platforms without losing content, URLs or search rankings
  • Performance work — diagnosing and fixing genuinely slow sites, including Core Web Vitals
  • Security and maintenance — updates, backups, hardening, and cleanup after a compromise
  • Bug fixing — plugin conflicts, broken layouts, checkout failures, white screens

Why most WordPress sites get slow

Rarely the hosting, usually the accumulation. A page builder, then a slider plugin, then an SEO plugin, then three more for one feature each. Every one adds CSS and JavaScript to every page load, including pages that use none of it.

My approach is subtraction first: audit what is installed, remove what is not earning its weight, replace multi-purpose plugins with small amounts of purpose-built code, and only then optimise images, caching and delivery. Doing that in the reverse order means optimising bloat instead of removing it.

Working with existing sites

I take over sites built by other developers regularly. The first step is always an audit — theme and plugin inventory, PHP and WordPress versions, page speed, security posture, SEO health — and a plain summary of what needs to happen and in what order. Sometimes the answer is "this needs less work than you think". You get told that too.
